My lessons are safe spaces, judgment free zones, and, most of all, a time to have fun. As a teacher, I always encourage my students to explore the wide world of music and find the artists and styles that really motivate them. I mix technical skill development (I've accumulated a number of exercise books and worksheets over the years) with playing along to the music you love—because that's how I learned! Read More

Because every student has different levels of experiences, aptitudes, and learning styles, my teaching methods vary based on each student. Generally, I work with the student to come up with a set of goals to work towards achieving. I teach the fundamentals of the instrument through learning songs that are of interest to the student. I generally use notation (sheet music) and will use instrument workbooks if it seems appropriate, while focusing mainly on developing the ear through listening. Read More

With more advanced students, furthering a students development and introducing more challenging concepts is what I focus on teaching. With drumming, I like to incorporate concepts such as polyrhythms, an understanding of different genres, improvisation, and ear training. For students that are preparing to pursue a degree in music, I can help them prepare for an audition because of my experience of being a college music student in the past. Read More

I cater each lesson to each individual student and their needs/desires, therefore no lesson or student has the same lesson plan. I can teach for different instruments and various styles, so those as well as the student's personality/skill level all factor in to how I will teach them. However, 3 things that I pretty much universally teach to all students of all styles are 1) scales, the fundamental building blocks of all music; 2) music theory, every style has it's own version of music theory and it is immensely helpful in understanding how to play it; and 3) learning songs that interests the student, because nobody is going to want to stick with music if they are forced to play songs that someone else wants them to learn. I always start beginning students with proper technique. I believe that great technique is the foundation of a great musician. I use a few different method books including Hal Leonard's Essential Elements, Stick Control for the Snare Drummer, Modern Rudimental Swing Solos, Tommy Igoe's Groove Essentials among others. I also believe that all musicians, especially drummers should have a strong rhythmic foundation so I incorporate sight-reading, call and response, and ear training to build the young musicians' instincts.
