Aquiles Navarro is a New York-based trumpeter, composer and DJ of Panamanian heritage. He derives his sounds from folkloric music, salsa, and reggae. This eclectic music background, based on his upbringing in Panama has led him to collaborate with folkloric musicians, dancers, visual artists, actors, and poets. He studied in Panama with tenor player Carlos Garnett and trumpeter Victor “Vitin” Paz. After moving to the US, he received a Bachelor's degree in Jazz Performance at the New England Conservatory, and a Master’s degree from the Frost School of Music at the University of Miami where he studied with trumpeter Brian Lynch. For beginning woodwind students, I have had success using the Rubank method books as a starter. Alongside a method book, I like to work on material chosen by the student, as well as my own supplemntal exercises. It is important for the student to understand the musical concepts associated with the repertoire, as well as focusing on performing well. I also prefer to have my students keep a practice log book, in order to track their progress. For piano and music theory, I like to use the John Thompson method for beginner students, and the Bastien Piano Literature series for more advanced students. My primary instrument is Clarinet but there are a lot of basic things that could be used universally across all genres and instruments. I always stress the importance of foundation on and off the instrument. In addition to understanding the assembly of the Clarinet, breathe support, and embouchure training, I encourage students to have a basic knowledge of theory as we will begin to learn notes, rhythm, and scales. My teaching style is flexible based on the individuals needs. Some students require a firm approach whereas others are better off with a gentler one. I pride myself on my ability to connect with students and find what motivates them. My approach heavily relies on the historical pedagogy of every instrument I teach while also implementing improvisation and free play to excite and motivate.
