Great music lessons are a mix of solid technique building and fun application of those skills. I always spend the first few lessons getting the student familiar with the basic technique of the instrument, and then quickly move on to duets, improvising, sight reading, solos, etc. that tie in with the current technique studies. I am originally from Alabama and graduated from the University of Alabama in 2008 with a Bachelors degree in Clarinet Performance. Then I moved to Philadelphia to continue my education. I graduated from Temple University with a Masters degree in Clarinet Performance. As a teacher, I am very motivated and persistent. I vary my methods according to student level, age, and practice habits. For example, for the advanced high school student I often mold my teachings around college audition requirements and all-state, regional band auditions. Otherwise, particularly for younger styudents, I am not very performance oriented. I think it is more important to learn to "play" at music rather than plan and prepare for multiple recitals.
