My teaching style is very straight forward, I am not a strict teacher. I always try to enlighten my students to find their own voice in music by encouraging and inspiring. I want my students to understand they do not have to sound or play like anybody but themselves, which make their music unique and beautiful. I would expect my students to follow my instructions, and come to lessons prepared. Read More

Being welcoming and helping my students to be comfortable is important. As a public school educator, I have witnessed the difficulty some students have in trying to be creative and to 'perform' in front of their peers. It's more difficult I find in one on one situations or when their parents are present. It's vital to make connections with the students and the parents in order to set up realistic expectations. I am dedicated, persistent, and reliable. I am willing to learn and keep learning for the advancement of myself and my students. A well-rounded appreciation for music as well as critical listening and ear-training skills will be taught. I also maintain a pretty fast paced lesson, enabling the student to have plenty of practice material, technique studies, and goals to meet. I will record the student's progress electronically so that the student may better understand and learn from their lessons. I will inspire my student’s, positively influencing and encouraging them along our journey of musical discovery. Read More

For junior high and beginning students I like to go over proper embouchure, rhythm counting and creating a solid sound. After that's established I like to get started on technique exercises, scale practice and practice methods for their own benefit outside of lessons. The junior high students will continue to start learning the circle of 5ths, both student levels will work out of the Standards of Excellence Green book or Red book. Read More

I do not usually follow any method book as every student is different, has different background, goals and aspirations. I try to mix exercises/methods that I use in my practice with materials of accomplished pedagogues. I have my set of warm-ups that I use on saxophone, clarinet, and flute; I often find myself using flute method while playing the saxophone which only pushes my and my students abilities and makes them better musicians. I custom-tailor my lesson plans for each individual student based on a variety of factors such as prior playing experience (if applicable), student's desired goals and outcomes, student availability, etc. A typical first lesson with me will be spent going over what goals you want to achieve and how I can best serve you in reaching those goals by working with you to develop an effective plan of practice. In addition, I will share the knowledge and expertise I have gathered from my teachers and my own musical career to ensure that you have all of the tools and resources you need to start seeing the results you want. For piano students, I like to use the Alfred courses. This method is great because they have courses of study for all ages and levels, and students can progress through several courses throughout their study. For flute/clarinet students, I like to start with either Hal Leonard's Essential Elements or the Rubank methods books. Once students have moved beyond the basics, I like to introduce solo repertoire that is appropriate for their level. Read More
