Younger students have typically needed assistance in their beginning band repertoire, while older students are eager to branch off and do solos and chamber ensembles. I help them select the repertoire that is best for them--but ultimately allow them to make the choice. Every lesson, I incorporate duets. Nothing improves students like playing with someone else. I believe in considering a students goals in developing my approach, so if someone wants to learn jazz, or loves a particular pop song, that is where well start. I have also worked with a contemporary community music school in San Diego with a "Rock" Focus, working with elementary and middle school drummers, vocalists, guitarists and pianists to form their own bands.Currently, in addition to teaching privately, I am an Arts Department Substitute Teacher for La Jolla Country Day School, working with both their band and orchestra programs in the Lower, Middle, and Upper Schools.
