I have a B.A. in Music from Arizona State University. I have been trained in all the orchestral instruments, but my specialties are piano, clarinet, saxophone, and guitar.
I am married to my wife Valerie; we have four children ages 4-13. I graduated from Arizona State University with a degree in music and have been trained in all the orchestral instruments, specializing in piano, clarinet, and guitar. I am currently teaching at the Terra Nova School in La, Mesa, and we have been living in San Diego now for almost 20 years. We are Christians, and pastored in the city for 15 years. I am a passionate teacher who loves music, and who desires to instill this love of music in all my students!
I have been teaching in San Diego for over 15 years, and before that I was in Phoenix, AZ. I have been involved in countless wind bands, orchestras, and various ensembles over the years. I studied clarinet under Dr. Robert Spring and Dr. Jorge Montilla. I have a very strong piano base since I have been playing piano since I was 9. My wife is also a music teacher and taught band, guitar, and steel pa drums in Mesa, AZ. We believe that music is a cruicial part of a person's life and developement.
I teach by example and from music books to help establish the basics in musical learning. I am an instructor who believes that the best way to learn is by watching and learning the instructor, and then having the instructor demonstrate for the student. The student will learn what proper technique is, will learn what proper and excellent performance looks like, and will be challenged to be a more excellent musician when spending time with the instructor. I also make sure that music theory is taught as this is the basis for learning not just one instrument or style of playing, but all styles and all instruments.
I usually have a certain routine that I take the students through. I teach them technics, theory, warm-ups, and performance songs almost every time we get together for a lesson. By the time I have been teaching a student for 6 months they always know what the lesson is going to look like before I get there. I always give them somethings to practic throughout the week to go over when we come together the next time. This way the student is always learning somethings new and reviewing old material.
We love our music teacher, Ryan. He is kind and patient. He has the right balance of emphasizing timing and musicality with just trying to get the notes out on a new instrument. He is on time, is very friendly and encouraging but doesn't waste time during the lesson. We highly recommend him.
