I am a native from Cuba but have been living in San Francisco Bay Area for more than 10 years, which has given me the opportunity to participate in artistic events from diverse cultures. I began playing the clarinet in 5th grade and immediately fell in love with the instrument. After playing throughout middle and high school, I went on to earn my Bachelors of Music degree in clarinet performance from Temple University, followed by a Master of Music in clarinet performance and a Master of Arts in musicology from the University of California, Santa Barbara. I had the pleasure and good fortune to study with noted clarinetists and instructors Anthony Gigliotti, Ronald Reuben, and Rosario Mazzeo, from whom I learned not only the intricacies and complexities of my instrument, but also how to be an effective and compassionate teacher. I like to play audio/recordings for the students when possible, so that the student has an idea of the style, or the piece that we are studying. This gives them something to reference to, but also gives them an aural aspect in their playing/practice habits. I also model for them constantly, so that they get more visual and aural reinforcement. I sometimes give them short music concept/vocabulary assignments, such as learning the names of the notes on the staff, counting rhythms, meters, etc; all having to do with music theory and musical concepts that can be directly applied to their practical aspect of playing.
