Most important to my teaching is that each student to listens to a lot of music, and learns to play the music that they love as soon as possible. I work with a variety of method books/videos depending on skill level and stylistic interest, and teach time-tested regimens for building raw ability on the instrument. I also have many exercises of my own invention that are fun to listen to and play, while still remaining challenging and building facility. Read More

Hello! My name is Chris. I am a full time professional performer. My instrument is the bass (both double bass and electric bass). I have been playing the bass for about 20 years now. Before that, I had sung in choirs from a young age, and I continue to sing to this day. I also studied piano from age 8, which I truly believe helped my musical development immensely. The genres that I perform within the most are jazz, avant-garde, rock, and folk. Read More

I generally begin with Alfred's Guitar Method for very young students or adult students who are interested in learning the rudiments of music. For intermediate students we work on polishing technique. I also use the Royal College of Music series for young students who are interested in taking the ABRSM placement exam. I have adult students who also want to learn songs they enjoy listening to, so we work with tablature (numbers). Read More

For advanced players, I like to take a deep dive into an area that they have historically struggled with, whether it be composition, improvisation, using theory as a lense to better understand how their favorite music works, transcribing, and more. My comprehension of rhythmic theory and harmonic theory is very deep and intuitive. Let's take a really close look at an area where you've been struggling and help you to elevate your skill to a masterful level. Read More

As part of my graduate and undergraduate studies I regularly taught both locally and abroad to students of all ages, skill levels, and backgrounds. I have also maintained a steady private studio, teaching individual lessons to students for over five years. My teaching style has a strong emphasis on developing and maintaining engagement and excitement with the subject. I believe that a positive attitude is essential to a student’s growth and it is my responsibility as a teacher to develop that attitude. Read More

For beginning woodwind students, I have had success using the Rubank method books as a starter. Alongside a method book, I like to work on material chosen by the student, as well as my own supplemntal exercises. It is important for the student to understand the musical concepts associated with the repertoire, as well as focusing on performing well. I also prefer to have my students keep a practice log book, in order to track their progress. For piano and music theory, I like to use the John Thompson method for beginner students, and the Bastien Piano Literature series for more advanced students. Read More

Over the years, I've taken lessons from instructors who had an array of teaching styles. While in high school, I was taught through intimidation and was scared into learning, which is something I was able to handle. This methods can actually turn students away from music which is the main reason dislike approach. Students should be comfortable and relaxed when entering a lesson. This not only creates a positive learning environment for the student but helps create a relationship between instructor and student that only helps the growth of both individuals. Read More
