I am a skilled, diverse, and seasoned guitarist with 30 years of experience performing, touring, and teaching. Always professional, positive, and dedicated. I provide my students a fun and challenging learning environment and motivate them to discover unique inner strengths, abilities, and what truly inspires them. I am a diligent, thoughtful listener, and passionately focused on executing the best possible performance for myself and my students. I have worked with many extraordinary teachers to develop a curriculum that meet the needs of each individual student. I enjoy building confidence in their ability to achieve, both musically and personally. In addition, I have taught students with varying disabilities.

I'm a professional jazz guitarist for 30 years and have performed, recorded and toured with many outstanding musicians including Bill Carrothers, Dave King, Michael Lewis, Daniel Carter, Sean Wayland, Matthias Bublath, Willie Wisely, Mark Ledford, Funky Town Studios and TROMA Films. I received my BFA from the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis studying with award-winning composer Judith Lang-Zaimont and passionately pursuing jazz and classical guitar performance.
Since I was 19, I have established myself as a dynamic, hard-working musician who offers a highly creative style, deep love of music, and an unwavering commitment to improve the quality my music and teaching abilities. Students have successfully achieved the results they desire. My passion, extensive experience, personal connection, and my detailed approach to teaching provides proper methods for advancement. "Whether performing their original songs or beautifully interpreting songs from any generation or nation, Ray G. & Commonwealth posses a rich musical tapestry that seamlessly stretches from Miles to Mavis (Staples), Memphis to the Middle-East, New York to Nashville to New Orleans & beyond. Rhythm & melody are the key to this group’s danceable dynamic! Expect frequent guest artists keeping the music continually exciting & unique.” (Village Voice 2009 Year End Reviews) **All students who had auditions for music conservatories and universities passed their auditions with higher placement opportunities than other applicants upon beginning an advanced degree.

LESSON STYLE

I strive to provide the highest standards of music instruction and performance for my students by developing curricula that meet the needs and differences of each individual student. By showing the correct path forward, I can build confidence in their ability and inspire them to achieve greater success, both musically and in their lives overall. I continually improve my teaching skills and use the most effective and efficient methods to ensure maximum success. I try to guide students as a positive role model committed to each students’ musicianship and over all well-being. I enjoy building self confidence in their ability to succeed. I believe that everyone is capable of performing music well. They simply need to be given the proper practice methods, technique, and motivation. We connect with others through music, as it is the universal language. What we learn through music helps guide us to be positively engaged in our communities, become happier and healthier individuals, and build stronger relationships. In addition to detailed technical training, students are taught how to maximize their practice time, use their body properly, and learn to create beautiful music. Students gain greater confidence and motivation to practice and perform while sharing that joy of music with others.
