For beginning students I make sure we know every warm up exercise and stretching exercises for the fingers after explaining the importance of rehearsing properly. We will start getting familiarized with a couple circles until the student fluently knows how to accompany every chord. I use songs as tools that include new information; so, with each piece, student learns something new with the joy of "just" learning a song. These local children reminded me of myself when I was younger and strived to study music with a financially-difficult background. Helping these kids really was the highlight of my day as I could see how music has helped them grow. I will always feel grateful and excited to give back to my communities through what I do. I love seeing students enjoy their music lessons! I typically begin the lesson asking the student how their practice went for them, allowing them to communicate their successes and struggles from the previous week's practice. We then set some attainable goals for the lesson, and the student then shows off whatever they worked on that week. I've found that in an effective lesson, the student spends 50% of the lesson or more actually playing the instrument, rather than spending the whole time listening to instruction. Read More
