Because of the delicacy of the youngest voices, I believe this is the most fundamental aspect of singing. Range can be developed as the vocal mechanism develops, but this will all be made easier with a solid support structure. I encourage all my students to learn the basic rudiments of music including music theory, sight-reading and playing ‘by ear’. I recommend Mel Bay’s “Children’s Guitar Method” and Hal Leonard’s “Guitar Method Book 1” for school age children. However, many of my students have decided to concentrate on learning basic theory involving chords and scales to develop ability to play ‘by ear’. This was where my passion for teaching music flourished. Under Director Sherker's wing, we taught and directed the elementary school string orchestra and chorus programs.
