I typically teach with method books as references for younger students, occasionally using printouts to give to students to take home and study in order to have a better undertanding of what was gone over in class. As students become more proficient in music reading and theory understanding, we develop an understanding of what the student would prefer to learn in regards to genre and focus on that, and the technical aspects of playing that lead to proficiency in that genre and style. Generally, I find that students that can read music can understand music concepts a lot better that those that don't read music. That being said, there are students that don't want to learn to read and I understand that as well. For those students there are many methods available that can help them achieve what they want.
