For my voice students I encourage the idea that singing is a very physical activity, it dose not just "happen". Proper technique, breath support and a physical stretch are key elements to prevent strain and injury and promoting longevity. I usually begin with music that a student likes be it classical, opera, jazz standards or even more contemporary pop music, I also encourage them to listen to various recordings of the pieces we are woken with to sharpen their musical ears and to show them that there is no "one way" to sing a song or perform a pice of music. With students of any age, I consider it my number one priority to create a learning environment that is both encouraging of their growth and passion for music, and supportive/safe for them to take the risks and meet the challenges necessary for that growth. I always work to maintain a dialogue with students about their interests and ensuring that our work includes and stimulates those interests, while also finding ways to make our work on fundamental techniques and building blocks as engaging and fun as possible. I try to incorporate different exercises for each piece of music to keep things interesting for my students. I believe active physical engagement of the body is important to achieve freedom for the voice. This is particularly helpful for younger children to keep their minds from wandering during the lesson. I often ask for feedback from the students, to check in on how they are feeling physically and vocally. During our lessons, I hope to train up students to be creative thinkers and discerning individuals so that they can find their own authentic interpretation of the song. Read More
