I began teaching private voice lessons to high school-age children in 2016. Since then, I have had the opportunity to work with people ages 5-30. The Metropolitan Opera Guild was an excellent teaching experience, where my mentors included teachers at Lincoln Center and New England Conservatory alumni. As a participant in NEC's Vocal Pedagogy program, I had the experience of teaching lessons to my colleagues in NEC Opera. It's important to me that students are invested in their own lessons, and what this means will differ from student to student. For some five year olds, that may be simply participating in the whole lesson and practicing a few minutes per week. For others, it may mean being challenged with advanced materials. Each student will receive a unique repertoire and lesson based on ability and interests. I focus on technique, then repertoire, then theory, then review for a 30 minute lesson, and younger students will often get a fun music-based game at the end if the lesson has been fruitful. I believe music should be fun and the process of studying it should be fun. But like everything else, it has challenges, and I think the fun part should be finding solutions to those challenges. I will give them fun exercises and I will give them questions to think about.
