My main goal as a music educator is to help students discover their own spark, or passion, for music and give them a space to let that spark grow and flourish. I like to give small assignments each lesson based on their interests and goals we set together, which I believe helps motivate the student to improve and encourages them to make new musical discoveries each week. I'm dedicated to providing a creative learning environment for students that encourages experimentation, growing from mistakes, and discovering great joy through music. Read More
Instruments: Cello
I'm a dedicated cellist and collaborative musician. Through my training, I have been fortunate to work with a number of inspiring mentors and teachers. I began my serious training on the cello in Santa Barbara, California where I participated in the Santa Barbara Music and Arts Conservatory. It was through this program that I came in contact chamber music, and artist-teachers who instilled in me a drive for the richness, color and palette of sound possibilities the cello can create. I strive to strike a careful balance between classical technique and pop performance. I want my students to have fun and fuel the desire to become better musicians. I use the Suzuki Method (to a certain point) in conjunction with my own method for learning music theory and ear training. I always ask my students what they're listening to and what they would like to play - I'm open to virtually any genre. Read More

If a student comes to me with more experience, I will select repertoire based on their interests, technical proficiency, and past repertoire. I very often write mini-etudes and technical exercises for each one of my students based on their personal musical path. Other repertoire I have assigned varies widely and includes Bach, Beethoven, Bartok, Scriabin, Shostakovich, Faur, Ravel, Barber, Glass, Cage, Oliveros, Ligeti, Saariaho, and Ellington, along with Great American Songbook repertoire, jazz standards, text pieces, pop songs, improvisation exercises, and animal song imitation. For beginners I often start with the Standard of Excellence, but it does not take long before we start to get into more individualized education. For example, a student may be bound for high school jazz band, in which case we will immediately begin on music theory and scale/mode practice from as early as 5th grade. On the other hand, I may have a high school flute student who wants to audition for conservatory, in which case I would use some Marcel Moyse books, orchestral excerpt practice, and standard solo repertoire. When teaching beginners, particularly children, I frequently incorporate the Faber Piano Adventures method into my lessons. This renowned curriculum offers a well-structured and comprehensive approach to piano education, covering fundamental techniques, music theory, sight-reading, and an engaging repertoire. I have found that its gradual progression and captivating materials effectively establish a solid foundation for young learners. As students advance and acquire a solid grasp of the basics, I introduce them to suitable solo repertoire, preparing them for their initial recital performance. Read More
