We also begin work on scales and cadences. Since dexterity and interest in exploring the keyboard usually exceeds note-reading ability. I use a chart to spell out scales and chords instead of a scale book at this point. Students enjoy progressing through the songs and ask for new scales. By the time they've completed "Teaching Little Fingers...." and have learned single-octave C major, A minor, G major and E minor scales, we're ready to move on to John Thompson's First Grade Book. Having pursued music from a young age, my experiences as a vocal soloist and choir member have brought me all over the world, performing in such musical landmarks as the Sydney Opera House, Smetana Hall, and Carnegie Hall. I grew up learning both voice and piano, and my musical education has provided me more confidence and opportunities in all aspects of life than I ever could have imagined. I began teaching while pursuing my undergraduate degree in California and have since expanded my studio to include a wide spectrum of ages, styles, and experience levels.In 2012, I received my BA in Music with an emphasis in classical voice from Pepperdine University and have since gone on to complete my MM in Voice Performance from The Boston Conservatory. I would begin each lesson with a vocal warmup so that I can see where their tone is placed and if they are an alto/soprano/tenor/etc. I would ask what genres they are interested in or what types of music they like. If they have a song they'd want to learn, we would practice that song and work on technique so that they can perform it in a healthy and confident way. Read More
