I first find out a little bit about my students musical likes and taste, or, with younger students, find somethingfun that interests them, just to find some common ground. I also find out a students long term goals. For instance, if a student seeks to be a opera singer as opposed to a worship leader, the training needs to be more pointed towards classical pieces and Arias instead of learning church music and how to engage a crowd. For beginning students under the age of 12, I typically like to start with Singing Lessons for Little Singers and New Singing Games for Young Singers: Ten Original Singing Games by Donna Rhodenizer. Once they have progressed and picked up the fundamentals from these lessons I like to move on to Hal Leonard's Giant Book of Children's Vocal Solos.  Music is a very physical thing as well as a very abstract thing.  In my lessons, there will be kennistetic learning through movement as well as teaching through sensation. Using tools like Solfege it helps create muscle memory and tuning. Piano students will learn a wealth of theory knowledge, correct posture and fingering patterns. I will also encourage singing in my piano lessons to reaffirm the student's aural skills. The Alexander Technique is also something that my students will explore in our lessons. Read More
