At the first lesson is just seeing where they are and what kind of music they would want to play(hymnal songs, gospel songs, soundtracks, opera, classical etc). Then at the beginning of each lesson would be theory(note recognition, counting, fingering etc). Then review on what they practiced for the week and if they are confident with the pieces add a few more songs. At Christmas time and the end of spring I like to have to have a recital for the students to play a few of the songs they learned for their friends and family. Read More

I’ve been teaching private lessons since my sophomore year of college at UNCP. I had few students at a local middle school that I volunteered at as well as some students at my former high school. While there, I have maintained a studio between 10 and 20 students varying in age from 8-65 and have consistently had students make All District. Read More

For beginning students, I typically start with Suzuki Book 1. A strong foundation is key to playing the violin/viola. I do teach the Suzuki method, but I understand that method of teaching does not work for all students--one size does not fit all. I believe all students have the innate ability to learn an instrument despite their background. I find the Suzuki books provide a strong foundation with the ability to play full songs from the start. It is a joy to watch my students find enjoyment in music! I understand that each student progresses at their own rate, so I make it a point to always discuss with my students what their goals and hopes with lessons are. This allows me to tailor my lessons to each student's wants and needs, which in turn helps motivate them to practice and grow in their musicianship. Another important component of teaching is to set realistic goals for my students, both short-term and long-term, to help encourage them. Read More
