For beginner students, I typically start with Hal Leonard's Essential Elements, since it is commonly the book used in middle school bands. From there, I transition the student to solo repertoire by finding/transcribing music that the student enjoys before introducing appropriate more formal solo repertoire. I also begin teaching students basic music theory and slowly start to introduce more advanced techniques, such as vibrato and double-tonguing.  Music is a very physical thing as well as a very abstract thing.  In my lessons, there will be kennistetic learning through movement as well as teaching through sensation. Using tools like Solfege it helps create muscle memory and tuning. Piano students will learn a wealth of theory knowledge, correct posture and fingering patterns. I will also encourage singing in my piano lessons to reaffirm the student's aural skills. The Alexander Technique is also something that my students will explore in our lessons. Read More

I first started tutoring younger students in violin when I was in high school, but after graduating from college I took on an instruction position at a local music school as Strings Instructor. There, I began teaching much younger students using mutli-sensory techniques to keep my students engaged and most importantly, having fun! I have taught several of my peers and young students alike in the art of trumpet playing! My main goal in a lesson is to build the fundamentals and branch out from that basic understanding of the instrument. In any form of music, especially classical, a musician must have a firm understanding of the basics in order to excel in their musical future.
