Before that, I was employed by New York Edge (formerly Sports And Arts In Schools Foundation) as a Teaching Artist/Mentor. I was placed in an Alternative High School in Manhattan called City As High School where I worked with students aged 16-21. Specifically, I worked with a program within the school called MAD (Music, Art, and Design) Academy. For all my students, including vocalists, I always try to keep things enjoyable with mixed repertoire assignments. Even at beginner levels, I've seen some of my students cover the songs thattheywant to learn. I didn't learn to sing and play the piano by being forced to play songs I didn't enjoy as a listener. The key is finding music that is both challengingto create andfun as heck to perform. The most important thing for me as a teacher is to see my students having fun, and really enjoying learning their instrument. I want to see them be passionate about getting better because they’re excited about what’s coming next. By learning about the students goals, and also learning about their musical taste and the kinds of music that inspire them, I can create a lesson plan that totally dedicated to each individual student so that they get the most out of their lesson, and so that I get them closer to their goal. A vital part of developing voice repertoire is exploring various interests and styles. I encourage all vocalists to choose songs that they will enjoy singing, but I will guide my students in exploring any realm otherwise not explored. I encourage healthy singing and practicing techniques that will ensure productive rehearsal without fear of vocal damage. A professor of mine used to always say, "there is no singing without acting", and I ensure that when a student sings a song, they will not only know how to sing properly, but they will also have a deep understanding of what they are singing about and how to convey the message. For guitar (beginners), I use Mel Bay's Modern Guitar book. For vocalists interested in jazz, I'll use The Real Vocal Book for material, and to teach out of, I'll use my beginner piano and guitar books for sight reading, and teach my own techniques from memory. I can work on any song the student might want to learn. I aim to work with the students at whatever level they’re at. Read More
