I typically create individualized plans for my vocal students, depending on their level. I focus on technique and ease of singing with proper breathing for support. I do visualization techniques to help achieve an increased range without strain. I incorporate music the student is interested in to maintain their interest and love of music. All students in my music program are introduced to the Quality Music Instruction Curriculum. The books in this curriculum, allow each student to advance at his/her own pace while maintaining consistent progress. In addition to the Quality Music Instruction Curriculum, lessons are supplemented with the Bastien series. I lay the foundation for music by teaching all of the necessary rudiments of music such as scales, fingering, chord structures and then I incorporate music that's appealing to the students. Assessment is the task during the first lesson. I must determine the student's voice type, and what style of music the student would like to pursue. If a boy's voice hasn't yet changed, I'll assess whether he is an alto or soprano. I'm a keen believer in teaching one to sightread and encouraging one to improvise with his/her instrument!
