For younger students, I always want to make sure our lessons stay fun, while encouraging growth at the same time, so I usually let them pick a song they like, and then I assign another to assist with their musical development. For older students and adults, we really dive into technique and vocal health, with a strong emphasis on technicalities like breath support and placement, and then use that foundation to branch out into multiple genres. A student must be comfortable enough to take the risks that are necessary to grow as a musician. Sometimes those risks will result in what seems to be a failure. I try to reinforce the idea that it is not a failure because you tried, what can we use from that experience to get closer to what you were trying to accomplish next time. Anyone willing to put in the effort and put their talent on display for correction and review is very brave and I honor that bravery. Read More

For children, I focus on the comprehension of pitch and note reading. If the child has a song that he or she wants to sing, then we will pursue it if it is vocally fitting. If not, I have a variety we can choose from. We also will pursue the fundamentals of music theory in our lessons as well. Teenagers to adults can also pursue the fundamentals of music theory or beyond depending on their current knowledge. Read More

Music is a language! I teach music in a similar manner as we learn to speak. We learn to speak through trial and error having no wrong words and music should be taught in a similar fashion, where there are no wrong notes. We learn our speaking style, manner and/or accents by what we hear and this concept also applies to music; therefore listening is a crucial part for advancement and the pleasure of learning. My teaching experience began at the University of Tulsa. I taught voice to a few students who were non music majors for about a year. After graduating from the University of Tulsa, I began teaching at Brook Fine Arts Academy in Tulsa, Oklahoma. I taught over 30 students a week in both voice and piano (ages 3 to 20) for over a year. In my work as a teacher, I have helped students prepare for school competitions, studio recitals, talent shows, solo and ensemble contest, and musical auditions. Read More

I base my teaching methods on the student I am teaching. For students that are children at a beginner level, I typically begin with the essential elements of creating vocal foundation which I draw from many sources. Once we have set a good foundation, we tend to begin working on repertoire that is appropriate for the level at which they are singing, using those songs as learning opportunities. For adults, I begin by asking about the goals of the individual student and I then formulate a strategy to help the student reach their specific singing goals. Read More

What advice do you have about practicing effectively?
As a voice teacher and entrepreneur, I firmly believe that effective practice is essential for progress and success in vocal development. Here's some advice I offer to my students and clients:
Consistency is Key: Consistent practice, even if it's just a few minutes each day, is far more beneficial than sporadic, marathon sessions. Set aside dedicated time each day for vocal practice to build muscle memory and maintain progress.
Focus on Quality, Not Quantity: Practice with intention and focus on quality rather than quantity. Pay attention to proper technique, tone production, and interpretation of the music. It's better to practice a small section of music thoroughly than to rush through an entire piece.
Warm-Up Properly: Start each practice session with a thorough vocal warm-up to prepare your voice for singing. Focus on exercises that target breath support, vocal range, articulation, and resonance to ensure a healthy and efficient vocal production.
Break It Down: Break down challenging passages or songs into smaller, manageable sections. Practice each section separately, focusing on technical accuracy and musical expression, before gradually piecing them together.
Use Recording Tools: Record yourself during practice sessions to listen back and assess your performance objectively. Pay attention to areas that need improvement and make adjustments accordingly. Recording tools can also be helpful for tracking progress over time.
Stay Hydrated and Rested: Proper hydration and adequate rest are crucial for vocal health and stamina. Drink plenty of water throughout the day and get enough sleep to ensure your voice performs at its best during practice sessions.
Mix It Up: Keep practice sessions varied and engaging by incorporating different vocal exercises, repertoire, and styles of music. Experiment with vocal improvisation, sight-reading, and vocal exercises to keep your practice routine fresh and stimulating.
Seek Feedback: Don't hesitate to seek feedback from your voice teacher or trusted peers. They can provide valuable insights, constructive criticism, and encouragement to help you refine your vocal technique and interpretation.
Set Realistic Goals: Set realistic and achievable goals for your practice sessions and vocal development. Break down larger goals into smaller milestones and celebrate your progress along the way.
Stay Positive and Patient: Finally, maintain a positive attitude and be patient with yourself as you progress on your vocal journey. Remember that improvement takes time and dedication, so trust the process and enjoy the journey of learning and growing as a vocalist.
