In these books, children learn the geography of the keyboard and learn about the contours of musical notation and by the end are using both hands. For adults, as well as intermediate children and up, I prefer the Michael Aaron series for intermediate and beyond. For beginning adults I use the Aaron Musical Primer. For beginning students it is most important to me to help them build a habit of "how to practice" to keep their voice healthy. Secondly, I give them individual exercises and short music excerpts that they enjoy and we can learn together. It is important to slowly introduce music that is a little more challenging and that will keep them engaged and knowing of their improvements. My love for teaching has grown over the years out of the success I see my students achieve. Being able to guide a student towards vocal growth is the most rewarding part of what I do. I love seeing the "lightbulb" go off for them. I have taken voice lessons for 14 years, and know how it feels to be frustrated vocally but also thriving vocally. Next, knowing what type of sound one wants to deliver or put out into the world is important, because no one wants to feel uncomfortable singing something that isnt for them. Nothing makes me happier than having the opportunity to share my love of music and guitar. Upon graduating from Skidmore College in 2000, I was accepted to Florida State University to the classical guitar program under the study of Bruce Holzman. I feel my decision to simultaneously work towards two masters degrees speaks clearly for my motivation and passion towards music. I have experience teaching all levels and genres and change my teaching to what is best suited for the learner. With piano students I enjoy using John Thompson and Alfred methods for beginners and I choose different songs as students get more experience. For voice students I use simple songs to develop their vocal technique. Through effective warmups and reading, students will develop musicianship skills.
