From way back in high school when I was the lead singer in a vocal group, I've always been singing, and I can say that singing is beautiful when emitted easily and well, fine as wine most anytime: celebrating births or mourning death, mating or contemplating, closing ranks or giving thanks, praising gods or turning clods of sod, selling soap or trying to cope, making magic moments day or night -- be it a keening wail, a chant or croon, a cheery singalong or a lone moan in the darkest hour before dawn. I have also taught general music from kindergarten up through 5th grade, and assisted bands at the university level. My performance experience has taken me to many wonderful places--College bowl games and the NCAA Tournaments to international hotspots such as Bogota, Columbia and even as far away as China. I have also been fortunate enough to perform with musical icons such as Doc Severinson, Mariachi Cobre, Byron Stripling, John Fedchock, Bobby Shew, Five by Design, Club Swing, the Harry James Orchestra, Andre Williams, and notable groups such as the Las Cruces Symphony Orchestra, Phil Campo and the "Loose Change" Jazz band, the Salt Lake Alternative Jazz Orchestra, and many others. I want everyone to feel that they can learn music and that music can be fun to learn and grow in. So I strive to learn how a student learns and do my best to cater my teaching style and the materials I use to help them learn tothe way they learn. For example, if you are a repetitive learner than I will try to solidify the techniques by teaching those techniques over and over again until they areabsorbed. Read More

For beginning students who are children, I usually start with simple things as rhythm exercises that awake their musical aptitudes, and also a couple of musical games that allow the children to learn music but still have fun and bring the possibility to engage a very intimate relationship with their instrument. For youngsters and adults, first of all, I try to find out their primary interests and musical preferences, in order to establish a clear and safe path to approach their learning process. Read More

I like to create lessons in which students learn to read traditional music notation, develop technique, and play familiar tunes. I use musictheory.net to help student practice reading note names. The faster a student can read musical notation, the faster the student can pick up new pieces. To develop technique, I want students to lean scales and arpeggios. Sometimes, we use a technique book to develop muscle memory, and other times technical exercises are created based on the tricky musical passages of solo or ensemble pieces. Read More
