Then I will move on to breathing by having the child place their hand on their diaphragm. I will show them that it is the muscle right above their stomach. I later went on to move back to the east coast and began substitute teaching in public schools for music. This allowed me to master working with younger students. My favorite piano method book for children is the Bastien Piano Basics Series. Alternately, I sometimes use the Faber & Faber Piano Adventures. For very young children (3-6) "My First Piano Adventure," a Faber publication, is my book of choice. For adults, I usually use Alfred's Basic Adult Piano Course, though sometimes I skip method books and play pieces picked by the student. I'm a Music Teacher/Vocal Coach in the Connecticut area where I began singing and playing the piano at the age of nine from various teachers throughout the area including the Neighborhood Music School and the Educational Center for the Arts.
