My teaching days, start back to when I was in high school. I have been directing the childrens choir at my church since 2009, here I develop lessons for students 5-10, each week to get them performance ready for performances once every 2 months. I have also been a voice instructor for the past year. I love being able to watch my students grow and learn the beautiful art of music. I have had experience in teaching Classical Voice and Piano, also rock, pop, and music theater for voice. Read More

For beginner students, I like to use the Faber books or the Thompson method for piano. I also encourage students of all ages to share what they enjoy listening to and incorporate songs they enjoy as early as possible. As students progress I get into more in depth concepts in music theory and improvisation, to provide a foundation in the language of contemporary music. For more advanced students, I try to play another instrument along with them sometimes to provide a taste of what it is like to make music in a group setting. Read More

I tend to stress fundamentals when it comes to what my philosophy of teaching is. I argue that the more time is spent on fundamentals, the better technique the student will have later on. The challenge comes into play with the fact the fundamentals can get tedious and boring! It is my duty to share creativity and fun ways of practicing the basics so my students can grow while enjoying what they are doing! Read More

For more advanced students, I use technique books and etudes by Hanon, Czerny, Pischna, and Chopin. I don't use a cookie cutter approach, but match the book to the student. It is important for me to expose the student, no matter the age, to not only written material, but chordal structure and basic harmony. Knowing the basic chords is important for understanding where music comes from, and even how to compose simple compositions. Read More

I always try to be encouraging. The most important thing is for my students to love music and WANT to practice. It may not always be "fun" (though, it should be most of the time), but it should always feel rewarding. Students come with varying abilities, talents, and goals. I want to support a students strong points and interests, while working on weaknesses in a positive and encouraging manner. It's important for me to listen to a student, see their learning style, and adapt to what they need. Read More

I have a focused yet comfortable approach to teaching. One of my greatest thrills is watching my students succeed in either conquering a new technique or simply feeling the joy of finishing a piece. I take into consideration who my student is, what they are going through and watch them grow over time into confident musicians, performers and individuals. I give each student the experience to learn to play with other musicians. Read More

I cater the lessons towards what the student wants while emphasizing the importance of fundamentals and theory. I incorporate songwriting and improvisation into my lessons, as well as songs the student wants to learn. I believe all students should be encouraged to be creative, while still maintaining a strong emphasis on fundamentals, thus leading to the creation of their unique musical style. I generally tend to split the lessons up into warm up techniques, repertoire, sight reading, listening/dictation, discussing music the student likes/wants to learn, and improvisation and songwriting.
