It is important for me to expose the student, no matter the age, to not only written material, but chordal structure and basic harmony. My teaching experiences go back at least 15 years.  I started when I was in college and have never stopped teaching.  In my lessons I focus on the whole child.  Together we find out where their strengths lie and capitalize on those strengths.  Music is supposed to be fun and that is one of my goals is to keep it fun and exciting for the student.  I find it is best to expose the student to all types of music new and old and everything from classical to hip hop. As we expand our musical knowledge, we also broaden our understanding of technique, because I strongly believe that every musician, no matter the genre they ultimately play, needs a strong foundation of musical knowledge and technical proficiency on the instrument. They have to be certain in what they are playing and communicate with other musicians what they are trying to get across and portray in any particular piece. Depending upon what area/instrument of music I'm teaching, I use a number of different materials, including (but not limited to) Tonal Harmony (Kostka, et al.), Essential Dictionary of Music Notation, Accent on Achievement, Hal Leonard's Essential Elements, or Rock House Method (McCarthy). The skill level of the student also dictates what resources I'll use.
