Hello! My name is Kathryn and I am currently a Senior at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire studying Vocal Performance. I have been taking private voice lessons for 5 years of my own, and will be graduating this coming Fall 2020 with a Bachelor's Degree in Vocal Performance. Shortly thereafter, I'm attending Graduate School to pursue a Master's Degree in Vocal Performance. Though I am a Classically-trained vocalist, I love to teach Musical Theatre, Classical and Opera; as I'm fluid in all three genres enough to teach them all confidently. Read More

Music is my life, my passion: I constantly maintain my demonstration of this, in my manner, my teaching, my performance. This, I find, is infectious to all who cross my path. I also maintain an attitude of gratitude for my talent, and my parents' love, support and encouragement of my music. By them placing me into lessons at the age of 6 (accordion!), along with my drive and dedication and high level of musical education, I am a full-time musician, performer, and music educator. Graduating from both Lawrence University and Alverno College, she studied vocal performance, music education, and French. I have been called the female Jack Black by many of my former and current students. So I do believe you could say that I am fun, I make things comfortable and provide a great environment to learn, but then I can also truly be serious and strict when it comes to practicing and performing. Expectations: Practice DAILY. Be ready for each lesson. Be willing to communicate with me about things you do not understand. Read More

For piano I use the Alfred series, and for violin and viola I use a combination of Essential Elements and Suzuki books. As students advance I introduce additional solo repertoire. My voice students learn from a variety of sources. I usually start with a song they know well and work from there. Students also learn a variety of warm-ups and sight-singing techniques. Read More

For beginning musicians, I like to start with the very fundamentals of music theory in order to get them comfortable with reading music and understanding what they are doing. Books I have used in the past include the Essential Elements series and the Melodious and Progressive Etude series. I also understand the importance of enjoying what one is playing, so I always urge students find pieces or books for themselves that they are interested in, and incorporate them into my lessons. What is your favorite style/genre of music to play and why?
I like almost all kinds of music, but I was born and raised on musical theatre and to this day that is what I'm most passionate about.
What does a normal practice session look like for you?
For 30 min:
10 min just to warm up. Nothing too loud, too high/low, or too strenuous. It can progressively get harder, but let yourself ease into this very physically demanding act.
10 min functional exercises - we work on finding the best exercises for you
10min of song work - if you do the warm up and functional part right, your voice should be in its best shape to sing songs
Do you use specific teaching methods or books? (Ex: Alfred, Bastion, Suzuki, Hal Leonard) Why did you choose them if you did?
for voice, I follow the principles of Somatic Voicework (sm). I use this philosophy because it's tangible. A lot of singing teachers use metaphors that might have worked for them but really mean nothing to most students. My methodology is based in vocal function, and every exercise is crafted with knowledge of the physiology of the body and getting the voice optimized to its peak performance.
What musical accomplishments are you most proud of?
Being on stage with the Houston Chamber Choir as we won a Grammy award was one of the coolest moments of my life! Being in that group was really special and taught me what it takes to make music at the highest level. Our follow up recording Circlesong will always hold a special place in my heart (Go check it out on Spotify!).
What do you think is the hardest thing to master on your instrument?
Committing to what it takes from the whole body. Singing isn't just about the throat - to be a truly great singer you have to take care of yourself. getting enough to eat, drinking enough water, getting enough sleep, not abusing your voice in loud settings, and dedicating the time to physical practice all take some sacrifice in order to fully maximize the voice. But it is SO rewarding whenever you have full control over the gift inside of your mouth!
Why did you choose your primary instrument?
My mom tells me I've been singing since I was 18 months old, so I would say it chose me more than I chose it! I love to sing because it's so personal and so visceral - it's the only instrument where everyone can truly play it!
Did you have a teacher that inspired you to go into music? How did they inspire you?
I've had a lot of teachers that inspire me! What I took away from them is how much they care about their students. The voice teacher-student relationship is a really special one, and I try to honor those who take care of me by taking care of my students.
What advice do you have about practicing effectively?
Target your practice instead of just going through things again and again. It's more efficient to focus on practicing just the parts you need to improve on before putting it in context than it is to run through the motions over and over again and hope it gets better. That's a surefire way to wear yourself out without improving!
How do I know if my child is ready to start lessons?
If they can open a Zoom call/YouTube video by themselves and don't have trouble focusing, they are ready to start lessons.
When will I start to see results?
It depends on how much you (or your child) practices outside of lessons. I typically recommend practicing at least 3 days/week to start, but the more often you practice the more quickly you can expect results. For most people, there is usually a some improvement within 4-6 hrs of lessons, but the process of learning the fundamentals of singing usually takes around 2 years, and that can vary depending on your individual situation.
