First and foremost, the main end goal for me with every single one of my students in my studio is attempting to develop the same love and passion for music that I have been so lucky to develop through having enthusiastic, knowledgeable, talented instructors as well. While I would love to see some of my students pursue a degree/career in music past a few years into high school, I realize that that is a tough calling to follow, and many times people sing or perform more as a hobby than a career choice. The goal for each lesson is for the student to notice their progress and develop a passion for music. Student input is very important to me. In my lessons I strive to make the student feel comfortable enough to ask questions and make comments about their own progress. I am encouraging yet firm and expect a lot from my students. My lessons are fun and informative, and they help me convey my love of music! Read More

My methods depend on the student's age, what they may have already begun in lessons with another teacher, and I also take into consideration the assessment of their learning style-choosing a method that works best for their needs. Basically you could say that I have no 'one' method. I have as many methods as I have students because every single student deserves for me to take the time to get to know them and to find out what educational practices will fit best with their learning style and personality. I always figure out where a student is at, and prefer to grow off the student's strengths as opposed to harping on their weaknesses. I have been in lessons before where teachers couldn't get past the smallest details, and these ruined the experience for me, as well as greatly affected what I was able to accomplish in my lessons. The opposite is also true, in that I have had teachers that haven't even informed me of a weakness that I had, and I wasn't able to improve because of it. Read More

What is your favorite style/genre of music to play and why?
I like almost all kinds of music, but I was born and raised on musical theatre and to this day that is what I'm most passionate about.
What does a normal practice session look like for you?
For 30 min:
10 min just to warm up. Nothing too loud, too high/low, or too strenuous. It can progressively get harder, but let yourself ease into this very physically demanding act.
10 min functional exercises - we work on finding the best exercises for you
10min of song work - if you do the warm up and functional part right, your voice should be in its best shape to sing songs
Do you use specific teaching methods or books? (Ex: Alfred, Bastion, Suzuki, Hal Leonard) Why did you choose them if you did?
for voice, I follow the principles of Somatic Voicework (sm). I use this philosophy because it's tangible. A lot of singing teachers use metaphors that might have worked for them but really mean nothing to most students. My methodology is based in vocal function, and every exercise is crafted with knowledge of the physiology of the body and getting the voice optimized to its peak performance.
What musical accomplishments are you most proud of?
Being on stage with the Houston Chamber Choir as we won a Grammy award was one of the coolest moments of my life! Being in that group was really special and taught me what it takes to make music at the highest level. Our follow up recording Circlesong will always hold a special place in my heart (Go check it out on Spotify!).
What do you think is the hardest thing to master on your instrument?
Committing to what it takes from the whole body. Singing isn't just about the throat - to be a truly great singer you have to take care of yourself. getting enough to eat, drinking enough water, getting enough sleep, not abusing your voice in loud settings, and dedicating the time to physical practice all take some sacrifice in order to fully maximize the voice. But it is SO rewarding whenever you have full control over the gift inside of your mouth!
Why did you choose your primary instrument?
My mom tells me I've been singing since I was 18 months old, so I would say it chose me more than I chose it! I love to sing because it's so personal and so visceral - it's the only instrument where everyone can truly play it!
Did you have a teacher that inspired you to go into music? How did they inspire you?
I've had a lot of teachers that inspire me! What I took away from them is how much they care about their students. The voice teacher-student relationship is a really special one, and I try to honor those who take care of me by taking care of my students.
What advice do you have about practicing effectively?
Target your practice instead of just going through things again and again. It's more efficient to focus on practicing just the parts you need to improve on before putting it in context than it is to run through the motions over and over again and hope it gets better. That's a surefire way to wear yourself out without improving!
How do I know if my child is ready to start lessons?
If they can open a Zoom call/YouTube video by themselves and don't have trouble focusing, they are ready to start lessons.
When will I start to see results?
It depends on how much you (or your child) practices outside of lessons. I typically recommend practicing at least 3 days/week to start, but the more often you practice the more quickly you can expect results. For most people, there is usually a some improvement within 4-6 hrs of lessons, but the process of learning the fundamentals of singing usually takes around 2 years, and that can vary depending on your individual situation.
