My undergraduate degree in music education and my master's in performance helped me in forming a well-rounded view of the music world. I have been teaching 1-on-1 lessons for around 5 years in my own private studio, music stores, and different area schools. It is one of my favorite things to do and I take pride in the development of young musicians as well as those trying to find music later in their lives. Read More

What musical accomplishments are you most proud of?
I am most proud of my experience performing as a production singer and vocal captain for Carnival Cruise Lines. Performing on the Carnival Spirit gave me the opportunity to make a living as a performer while traveling the world. I could not have had that experience without years of music education in my life!

Why did you choose your primary instrument?
When I was in the 5th grade, I decided that I wanted to play the trumpet because my grandfather played the trumpet. As a kid I had always looked up to him growing up and playing the trumpet made sense to me. Singing was always a passion of mine even when I wasn't "studying" singing in the traditional sense. My love for signing, and my interests in other famously talented singers was what motivated me to pursue a degree in voice and vocal music education. When you know what you want to do in life, you don't stop until you make it happen!

How do I know if my child is ready to start lessons?
I believe your child is ready to start lessons if they are starting to show an interest in singing or playing and instrument, they have experience learning from an adult other than their parents, and can focus for a 20-30 minute lesson.

When will I start to see results?
Each student's growth is different, but my students will leave each lesson with new knowledge of concepts. Results are also influenced by the amount of time spent practicing outside of the lessons!

Did you have a teacher that inspired you to go into music? How did they inspire you?
Of course! I had several teachers that inspired me to go into music. Each one of these instructors believed in me, and pushed me to be a better musician. It was their passion for teaching and belief in my abilities that helped shape me into the musician and educator that I am today.

What advice do you have about practicing effectively?
If you want to take you musicianship seriously, you really should try to practice everyday. One may think that the most productive practicing method would be to repeat an entire song over and over again, for as many hours in a row as possible, each day. However, it has been proven to be more effective to practice small segments of a piece of music, specifically the sections you are having the most trouble with, for shorter periods of time. By isolating the troubled sections, you're able to learn an entire piece of music in a shorter period of time.

When I Was Your Man Chords for Beginner Guitar (Bruno Mars)

...is there a progression change but the texture of the tune and the accompaniment pattern also changes.         Wrap-up   I hope that you’ve enjoyed learning the When I Was Your Man chords as much as I did in preparing this lesson for you. During the intro for this piece I mentioned Bruno Mars’s influences. I encourage you to listen to those artists and discover where Mars got his inspiration from. This tune is a beautiful piece of songwriting that has moments that seem, to me at least, to be inspired by The Beatles.   Thanks for hangin’ with me and... Read More

Make sure that your students (or their families) have your contact information too, so that if they have an emergency or are otherwise unable to make it to your lesson, they can let you know. Some teachers and music programs like to have an electronic media presence, like a web page or a Facebook account, which everyone can click into to read for the latest updates. The Benefits of Classical Voice Training

...the most rewarding result of classical voice training. Instructors who teach classical technique are thorough, causing the student to truly learn the ins and outs of his or her voice. The singer will learn to sing with the lyricism required for long, slow phrases, the agility to sing swift runs, and everything in-between. The student will leave with the confidence to explore other genres and apply their technique to non-classical singing (doing so is strongly encouraged by most teachers). Developing a classical foundation for your singing opens the door to virtually any style of singing.   Music History and Appreciation ... Read More

How to Write a Song

...to get you comfortable with setting words to music.   Chord Progressions Everyone’s songwriting process is bound to be different, but I normally gravitate toward beginning the process with building chord progressions. The type of chords you choose and how you decide to present them will determine a great deal about the song you’re writing. If we think of a song like a house, the chord progression is going to be the foundation. Melody gets all the love and attention, but it wouldn’t even exist without a thoughtful chord progression. If you’re new to the songwriting game, I recommend starting with ... Read More

Can You Learn Perfect Pitch?

...Sound of Music, specifically the song “Do-Re-Mi.” If you haven’t ever heard “Do-Re-Mi” give this clip from it a listen, not only because it’s an amazing part of musical theater history, but also because it demonstrates solfege perfectly.     If you haven’t taken any singing lessons, you should, because practicing vocal solfege exercises increases your ability to identify pitches. The “do, re, mi” exercises you learn in voice lessons teach you intervals. If you know that a piece of music happens to be conforming to a given scale and you can identify the root note of that scale (referred to as ... Read More
