As each student brings with them characteristics that are physical, mental as well as emotional, learning these characteristics allows me insights which form the creative process. My musical philosophy is heavily rooted in the Suzuki method of teaching music. I believe that a student can't simply pick up an instrument once a week and become proficient with it, but rather, they must practice a minimum of 30 minutes daily, and enjoy what they are doing! Music can lead to better grades in school, higher memory retention, and an improved sense of discipline and responsibility, but I believe that that all stems in the fun factor that music provides. I was lucky enough to be elected the Music Director of an all male a cappella group at Missouri State and much of my time was spent teaching vocal techniques, musicianship, and arranging to the group as well as individually. At this time, I was also the tenor section leader for the Missouri State Concert Chorale under the direction of Dr. Guy Webb. After college, I pursued a teaching career in Birmingham, AL where I taught private voice and piano lessons to 30-40 students a week as well as coaching group classes and rock bands for competition. I make sure to first introduce my students musical fundamentals, then progress to repertoire that is appropriate for the students' age and skill level. I scaffold learning concepts and sequence them so that students can confidently progress from one level to another. Music theory is woven into my teaching methods, strengthening students' understanding of their instrument. For piano, I like to teach from the Faber Piano Adventures books.
