My teaching style is free flowing and depends on the specific student. Everybody's experience with music is different and not everybody will pick things up as quickly as others so you must meet them where they are. Music is nerve-racking at first because expressing ourselves isn't something that is always encouraged so I look for something they are interested in to start off. From there, we build on musicality and find their original response to music. Read More

My approach to teaching is personal, flexible, and student-centered. I will start by finding out what the student knows already, and what the student wants to know. What kinds of music do they want to play, and why? (For instance: for fun; accompanying themselves singing; performing in front of people; becoming professional.) If the student can play some samples of songs they would like to learn, all the better. Along the way, some basics will surely be covered (chords, scales, basic music theory, various instrumental techniques). Read More

For as long as I can remember, music has played a large part in my life. By the age ten, I already knew that music would be more than just a hobby for me, it would become my career. I have been singing and playing piano for over 25 years. I received a BS in music industry studies with an emphasis on business, from the University of Colorado Denver in 2008. I have extensive experience in performance and the music industry as a business, and have had the pleasure of experiencing the local music scene first hand while playing in bands. Read More

I make sure to first introduce my students musical fundamentals, then progress to repertoire that is appropriate for the students' age and skill level. I scaffold learning concepts and sequence them so that students can confidently progress from one level to another. Music theory is woven into my teaching methods, strengthening students' understanding of their instrument. For piano, I like to teach from the Faber Piano Adventures books. For voice, I implement vocal exercises that can be easily replicated and practiced. Read More

Lessons are geared to the individual student. I try to provide a warm and friendly atmosphere while providing a professional experience for the students. Theory is emphasized as well as technique for both the piano and voice student. Most voice students will get a basic knowledge of music reading skills while piano students tend to have a bit more in depth studies. I also use fun worksheets to help with the learning of theory which are based upon the season that we are currently in. Read More

I adapt my methods to each student accordingly. Every person is unique and has a different taste in music. However I am strict in making sure that all my students understand the fundamentals of music. Ear Training, music theory, ability to read notation and tabs, understanding chords and voicing, how to count rhythms. I have a set list of songs I teach most of my students, as they help to develop technique and are usually well received by most students. Read More

I would describe my methodology as strength-based but rooted in patience and enjoyment. As each student brings with them characteristics that are physical, mental as well as emotional, learning these characteristics allows me insights which form the creative process. For example, I had a student years ago that had a finger anomaly (he had been bit on the finger by his wife's cat so we called it "cat scratch finger") and this prevented him from laying his ring finger flat on his fretting hand.
