I started teaching two years ago at a private lesson studio in Denver called My Music Skool. My main focus was on piano and saxophone. Now I teach privately as a freelance musician. Two points I emphasize when teaching are practicing at least once a day no matter how long you play and learning what inspires you. There will always be some sort of theory I sneak in whether it's learning scales or building technical skills that will build confidence and ability, but if these devices aren't being applied to the type of music that inspires the student, then learning music becomes discouraging instead of fun. In 2015-2016 I worked at Archimedean Middle Conservatory in Miami, FL teaching 6-8th grade general music. All students learned drum rudiments and call and response techniques. I also ran an after-school drum program where students learned more complex rudiments, rhythms, and how to play as a group. I had my first student when I was in middle school (around 1993). Jumping forward a few years later, I started teaching again around 1998 while attending Bekrlee College of Music. At that time I was only teaching partime but quickly escalated to fulltime once I graduated in 2001. At my peak, I was teaching between 40-45 students weekly. I'm originally from Idaho, where I received a Bachelor's Degree in Music Performance. I came to Colorado five years ago to attend University of Colorado.
