My teaching style is fairly easy going. I don't force unrealistic expectations on students because everyone is learning music for a different reason. I like to figure out what their reason is and progress accordingly. If it's a young student looking to continue music throughout their school career, I will make sure they learn how to read sufficiently and I will make sure they know how to play with peers by performing with the student as an accompanist. Once a three-year-old banging out chords on a piano, now a thriving cellist, pianist, percussionist, composer, and amateur recording engineer, my name is Rhett "Ret/R.D.C." North and I am a passionate, dedicated, and enthusiastic instructor who loves getting people excited about music! I am currently pursuing a Bachelor of Music degree in Music Composition and career certification in Music Technology, and my favorite part in everything I do is joining musicians, from beginner to master, in the joy of learning music. I began practicing music without a theoretical background, on piano, at age 8. My first exposure to music theory was in college. The written basis for the logic I'd already been hearing enraptured me. Then as now, an increase in my understanding of music theory equates directly to a practical application on multiple instruments. I believe this correlation between theory and idiomatic technique is the bedrock of any long term practice, serious or amateur. Read More

With my younger students I like starting out with Piano Adventures by Faber. I also like giving them songs that they know and like - that gets students excited about the repertoire they are learning. With older students I ask them which styles they prefer, and then we also find a suitable method for them. In general, I like giving students a variety of styles and pieces to keep them interested. I believe in Keeping it Fun! We get to play. Playing is a big part of the creative process, in that it involves experimenting and finding new ideas, thoughts, and processes that work best for each individual and that will lead to the perfect practice and the excitement of performance. When a student is ready, I will encourage them to do some suggested performing opportunities. Nothing is more thrilling to me and sometimes emotional, than to see one of my students progress to the point of loving music as much as I do, and to go on and spread the good to all those who will listen. This will vary given the student's abilities and particular intentions for study. In general, I focus on five distinct areas of learning: technique, theoretical understanding, reading, intuitive playing/learning by ear, and performance. I like to keep each lesson fluid and organized, by maintaining structure within segments of study. Within these segments we may venture into something unanticipated, so long as the student expresses interest, readiness, and the ability to learn. Read More

I have been teaching in various circumstances since 2010. I began with teaching middle school jazz sectionals, moved to high school marching band groups, and now teach masterclasses as well as private lessons. I have had the opportunity of teaching elementary aged students with Baton Rouge, LA's Kids' Orchestra program, and have taught college aged students through teaching assistantships and private lessons. My students have gone on to study their instruments in college, become teachers, and have grown to be more well rounded individuals. Read More
