Depending on what we need to work, I will spend the lessons focusing on certain areas to improve (e.g. breath support, jaw/neck tension, posture, pitch, range, diction, phrasing, etc.). Everything we do on stage begins with breath. Sing, Acting, Dancing- all of these require disciplined breath management. Once a strong foundation of good breathing is laid, I tend to use visual-spacial prompts to get the singer to feel the changes rather than use pedagogical terminology. While this is a wonderful set of tools, I will always defer to the student's learning style. I would begin each lesson with a vocal warmup so that I can see where their tone is placed and if they are an alto/soprano/tenor/etc. I would ask what genres they are interested in or what types of music they like. If they have a song they'd want to learn, we would practice that song and work on technique so that they can perform it in a healthy and confident way. Read More

I began teaching while at the Hartt School; where, after taking a number of courses in vocal pedagogy, I gave voice lessons to music students majoring in other instruments. I also tutored beginner and intermediate ear training while at the Hartt School. Following graduation, I taught private voice at a music and dance center in central Connecticut. For the last several years, I have been teaching at a number of community-based schools around Connecticut, including the Community Music School of Essex, Middlesex Music Academy, and Charles' Music Center.
