I was born and raised in Houston, TX and I received a Bachelor's degree in music education from The University of Texas at San Antonio and an M.M. in voice performance from Indiana University. During my time in San Antonio, I was a semi-finalist and finalist at NATS competitions. My teaching style is relaxed but focused. Understanding that each student develops at his or her own pace, I am patient and willing to answer any questions as we move along. I will set a goal for each lesson, and provide material to practice in between meetings. It's important to me that I find out what the student's goals are to ensure we are heading in the right direction. We will also incorporate the study of fundamental music theory and sight reading I give each student material to read on technique and terms, along with sheet music and recordings. Every voice student will take home a recording of vocal exercises with which to practice at home, and later, when sight-singing is mastered, the student will begin reading from the Vaccai vocalise book. Even though all students require different needs, I will usually start my lessons by warming up the voice with different exercises. After that, I will work on repertoire with the student. My favorite book for beginning singers is the 24 Italian Songs Arias. A lot of good habits and technique can be learned through repertoire. As mentioned, I began teaching in my teenage years and to this day, it is one of my greatest passions. Equipping someone with new ways to express their love for music and emotions inside is absolutely thrilling to me! I never assume a student cannot succeed. Progress comes quickly with a variety of songs supported by successive exercises and methodology. Parental involvement is highly recommended and I try to work with parents to determine motivational techniques. I have found that students need a regular practice time 4 to 5 times a week, even if it is only a few minutes at a time; but, hopefully, we can find music that they like to sit down and play.
