My philosophy is that the lessons should be personalised around the students needs and interests.  For voice, I work on vocal technique with my students, and on how to apply it to whatever style they like.  For piano, I like to work with the Alfred's piano books, gradually adding repertoire that matches their ability level, and can yet be fun. I have a few Faber and Alfred books for ideas of repertoire, but I also like to just let the student chose what songs they'd like to play, so that it's more interesting for the both of us! Instruments: Voice

I personally practice SOVT, where we start with light humming, use a semi-occluded means of vocalizing (such as lip trills or a straw in water). Then we move on to actual vocalizations. I like to start with vocalizing in ways that are natural and allow the vocal instrument to practice its range freely. I also incorporate light movement along with vocalizing that might bring more breath into a region of the body that frees up a certain pitch (for example, lower back). Read More

There is nothing more rewarding to me than a seeing a student play that song they love so much for the very first time. Many times, they never thought they would EVER be able to play it, but yet in only a few lessons hdere they are, playing it! I have a skill for breaking down what seems like a complicated subject, and explaining in the most simplfied way that everyone can understand, no matter their backround. Read More

I believe that choosing lesson material should always be a collaborative experience between student and teacher. Flexibility is one of my core values in teaching music, as I’ve found that each student has unique interests, goals, strengths, and weaknesses. Rather than going into lessons with a set curriculum, I like to give students some agency over what they’d like to learn while making sure to cover fundamentals as they apply along the way. Parts of an Opera: A Quick Beginner's Guide

...a composer named Giulio Caccini released a new collection of solo songs called Nuove Musiche (The New Music) in monodic style rather than the more traditional polyphonic style. This basically means that the songs featured a solo melody line with accompaniment. The songs had verses (meaning they were “strophic”), and they featured embellishments for the singer upon returning to previously sung material. Does this sound a lot like the operatic aria to you?   Well, Caccini referred to individual songs from his collection as “Arie.” Thus the “Aria” was born.   In opera, the aria is a solo melody performed ... He seems to have later regretted his refusal of the offer, as his fortunes did not return to their pre-French invasion level. ...their song forms.   The melody of each tune has its own form, but jazz also has a larger form structure since improvisation is involved. Commonly in small group jazz (trio, quartet, quintet, etc.), the group plays the head (melody), then a few members of the group take turns soloing, and then they play the head again. The large form of a jazz performance could be something like: intro, head, trumpet solo, saxophone solo, piano solo, drum solo, head.     Traditional big band jazz has a similar form, but may have some added elements, such as solis and shout choruses.   ... Clear, Concise and Straightforward   Music reading is a process that’s meant to be simple and straightforward for the musician. If you’re new to music notation, you might be shaking your head, but it’s true. Think about it from the composer or songwriter’s perspective. Why would anyone want the music reading process to be needlessly complicated and difficult? Music notation isn’t a frustrating math test; it’s a powerful tool that’s meant ... Read More
