My teaching style is very simple, "Give a man a fish, and you'll feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish, and you'll feed him for a lifetime." This is my philosophy of teaching. I am extremely enthusiastic about arts education and passionate about teaching. Ever since I started teaching music with a focus on early childhood music, I have been passionate in my commitment to three things: maximizing individual student performance, inspiring students’ interest in music and technology as well as instilling a sense of self-worth among all students! Both piano and voice students are required to become familiar with basic music theory. No worries if you are not proficient! We will get you there within the first few lessons. For piano students, I will start them with basic scales and the Hanon exercises. After the student masters a few of the beginning exercises, we will slowly begin to add repertoire that solidifies proper technique. I tend to only work with beginning piano students, as it is not my primary instrument. Read More

I began teaching while I was in college to young band students who had never before picked up an instrument, whether it was the keyboard or the oboe. This required teaching not only the technique of the instrument but also foundational musicianship. I also worked consistently with other college-aged students while they completed their piano skills courses, as well as the younger oboists in their technique courses and reed making classes. I never teach two people exactly the same way, because each singer is unique. Each singer has an individual set of physical, mental, and emotional characteristics. My goal as a teacher is to address each of these three categories, allowing my singers to grow in each of them. I will tailor my instruction to meet the needs of my students, to draw from their own experiences, and to use analogies and examples from the things they know and love. Read More
