With private lessons, it is important to tailor the sessions for each student individually. Some students require to a "push" while others might want a more relaxed lesson. I have been teaching privately since 1989, teaching piano and bass at 15 years old. Thirty years later I have become a multi-instrumentalist playing Violin, Viola, Cello, Double Bass, Electric Bass, Latin Baby Bass, guitar, piano, synthesizer, keyboard and voice. Assessment is the task during the first lesson. I must determine the student's voice type, and what style of music the student would like to pursue. If a boy's voice hasn't yet changed, I'll assess whether he is an alto or soprano. I'm a keen believer in teaching one to sightread and encouraging one to improvise with his/her instrument! I constantly show images of the vocal instrument, Its really important for the student to understand their mechanism, and when teaching young people I share the same information but using a more digestible vocabular. Both piano and voice students are required to become familiar with basic music theory. No worries if you are not proficient! We will get you there within the first few lessons. For piano students, I will start them with basic scales and the Hanon exercises. After the student masters a few of the beginning exercises, we will slowly begin to add repertoire that solidifies proper technique. I emphasize on solid foundation. I teach my piano students with classical techniques and music theory while they are learning piano, so they are building up both knowledges at the same time. I also emphasize on how to use their fingers properly with 3 basic rules. If students can master them, they can apply to any music they want to play in different styles.
