I usually start my beginning piano students who are children, in Alfred's Basic Piano Library, Lesson Book 1A. After a few months, I begin adding solo repertoire that is appropriate for age and ability. For middle school age students and adults, I start with Alfred's Basic Piano, Adult, Level 1. My teaching experience began in high school when my band director gave me the opportunity to teach lessons to some students at the middle school. When I went to college, this passion for teaching lessons grew as I was fortunate enough to have a small studio through the help of my college professor. As a teacher, I encourage regular practice on a consistent schedule for my younger students, encouraging them that individual practice is their time to learn more about their own instrument and gain a passion for music through performance. After my own experience with it as well as teaching it, Suzuki has great techniques and music for getting students experience in sight-reading, ear training, and memorization. With the youngest students I start with the fundamentals such as naming the different parts of the instrument and some basic rules with notes.
