As far as my methods, I like a healthy, fun approach. I like to keep my students engaged while teaching them proper voice technique. While working with soloist, I focus on the strength of that singer. We will work on what they are good at and make it even better. My first teaching experience was part of a college class over 10 years ago when as part of the coursework we had to "student teach." Between the anatomy and physiology we were learning, an introduction to various vocal pedagogies, and gaining an understanding of the psychological components of voice study, I was hooked, and I haven't stopped. Once I feel the student has a solid understanding of these fundamentals, I move onto introducing them to repertoire that I think would help in putting these newly learned fundamentals into use as well as allowing them to expand their knowledge on other important factors of singing such as diction, pronunciation, phrasing, keeping a legato line, and possibly language skills depending on the piece. Over time I may even have them bring in pieces they may be interested in and work with them on understanding how they can incorporate these fundamentals and newly learned skills into the music that they love.
