I like to mix technique with songs and styles of music the student is interested in so they get a full understanding of why technique is important and how it applies to songs and musical selections that are of interest to the student. I use my own materials and lesson plans based on my past experiences and education. For beginners, I will generally start with simple songs like Sweet Home Alabama, I Love Rock n Roll, and Heathens. These are all songs that can be played and sung simply and most students have heard them already! I have a routine that I use for the lesson time--breath exercises followed by the vocal warm up and then working on a piece. During that process I always encourage an open dialogue between myself and every student. I want to student to feel as comfortable as possible and always have the option to ask questions and take part in their development as a singer. I have been teaching music in various capacities for approximately the last four years. My private studio has included both in-person and online lessons. As the music director of Smooth Progressions A Cappella, I worked with college students of various skill levels to produce an EP and an album. We sang everything from Irish folk ballads to Justin Timberlake. I want to make sure my students are comfortable with what they are doing even when they are outside of their comfort zone. There is such a thing as too far so pushing them outside their limit is unhelpful in a private lesson. I want the student to feel excited and accomplished in what they are doing because everyone's musical journey is different, even if students are starting from the same skill level they will have different things they have to work on to become better musicians.
