It has taken me many years to actually say that with full confidence, but when I consider the joy I experience while teaching, and also look at the growth and improvement my students experience throughout their time with me, it is really clear: this is what I love, and this is what I have a unique gifting to do. I am a strong believer in students taking charge of their learning, so I like to have my students choose a piece of music of their choice, and I will pick another piece of music that I believe suits their voice. When sequential learning is introduced, along with material that motivates, this encourages dedication and progression. As a former certified school teacher my focus is on laying the right foundation for a lifetime of musical learning and enjoyment for the student. I want my students to develop skills in all aspects and styles of playing so that as their preferences progress they will be equipped for all genres and styles. However if an adult or intermediate level student wants to specialize I can accommodate them. For the young students who are just starting out in vocal lessons I like to recommend starting with the proper breathing techniques and moving in to singing from the diaphragm and more experienced techniques will follow after that. After we have touched on those techniques we will move in to the performance portion of the lessons and how to connect with the song and then being able to portray the message of the song clearly and efficiently to the audience so that they can connect to the emotions that are coming from the song. For beginning students who are children, I like to start with Hal Leonard's Piano for Beginners. Progress will depend on the students' willingness to learn and practice as well as encouragement from their parents. For students who already have an understanding of basic fundamentals, I will assess their skill level and select music appropriate for their progression and level of play.
