I enjoy teaching because I am sharing my love for music with my students. The most rewarding part of teaching is watching students grow personally as they learn to play and instrument and improve their musical and technical skills. I have taught every age, from 4 year old beginners to adult students. I've worked with college music majors who are looking for an extra bit of help, and high school students preparing for all-state and all-district auditions. Read More

Karla received her Music Educators license in Instrumental Music from William Jewell College in 2005. Instrumental Conducting, Secondary Music Methods, Instrumental Techniques, and Educational Psychology were some of the courses that prepared her to become a more knowledgeable teacher. She started private teaching violin and viola lessons in 2002 at REW Band and Orchestra. From there she went to Northland Cathedral School of music in 2006 before starting her own studio in 2010. Currently, Karla plays 4th chair viola with the St. Read More

For beginning students, children and adults, I start out with my own material that I have created over the past five years. I use it to start technique, note reading, and rhythm. Once the student completes the material, I move them to Suzuki books, etudes, and other pieces. I like to get student input when choosing music. I believe that the student will be more engaged in the lessons and practice when they are playing something that they enjoy. Read More

My teaching experience dates back to my high school days in Hong Kong, as I began teaching violin private lessons part time 14 years ago, and had been consistently teaching students in my home studio and a local music center for 8 years before I moved to the United States in 2012. In 2012-2014, I was hired as a violinist of the Kishwaukee Symphony Orchestra. In 2016-2017, I taught string private lessons to 7th and 8th grade students at Smith-Hale Middle School and I helped coach the school's string and wind ensembles. Read More

It is important to me that each of my students learns to love their instrument. But, even more than the love of their instrument, is the importance of knowing and understanding one's instrument. I offer positive reinforcement, encouraging my student in realistic goals. I acknowledge accomplishments that help fuel mystudent's desires to progress. However, I do not hide from the fact that pursuing music is a discipline. A well structured and commited practice time offers the best benefits. Read More

For intermediate students, I may still use a series of method books, but with most students I prefer to emphasize learning through repertoire. I have specific technique and theory books I use with students to provide structure to the beginning of lessons and practice sessions, but I find that most expressive and technical lessons are taught through music itself. By talking through healthy practice habits and jointly constructing daily or weekly practice plans with my students, I encourage them to take responsibility for how they use their time at the piano, and how to get things learned healthily and efficiently. When I am working with students with no experience or beginners I like to focus on the enjoyment and less explanation of technical matters. I like to work with students on learning to play a tune first so they feel more accomplished and dont lose the excitement due to the repetitive nature of learning a new skill. When I am working with students that are more advanced, I would do more listening and focus on technical skills. Read More
