Overview:
I am a professional and passionate violinist, pipa performer, composer, music theorist, and Chinese music scholar who loves teaching and performing. In 2018, I graduated from the University of Missouri-Kansas City with both a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Music Composition and a Master of Music degree in Music Theory. Besides performing as a soloist, I love collaborating with professional musicians from diverse cultural backgrounds. I also enjoy collaborating with visual artists, dancers, and actors.

EXPERIENCE
My teaching experience dates back to my high school days in Hong Kong, as I began teaching violin private lessons part time 14 years ago, and had been consistently teaching students in my home studio and a local music center for 8 years before I moved to the United States in 2012. In 2012-2014, I was hired as a violinist of the Kishwaukee Symphony Orchestra. In 2016-2017, I taught string private lessons to 7th and 8th grade students at Smith-Hale Middle School and I helped coach the school's string and wind ensembles.

METHODS USED
My teaching does not only focus on students' violin playing skills, but also their aural skills and musicianship. I strongly believe that ear training benefits a student's overall musical development. My lessons typically involve listening and singing on top of regular violin playing. I also love playing simple duets with my students during lessons, so that they feel comfortable collaborating with other musicians. For beginners, I typically start with Hal Leonard's Essential Elements for Strings. Once the student has managed the basics, I will begin to introduce repertoire of musical style that he/she is interested in.

LESSON STYLE
The ultimate goal for my teaching is to cultivate students' passion for music and their musical talents. I strongly believe that every individual student is different in terms of background, personality, and learning progress. My teaching approach is completely student-oriented, aiming to develop their musical skills and characters as unique individuals. I include step-by-step challenges into my lessons that are just challenging enough to keep my students feel accomplished without frustrations. I spend time understanding each student's interests and inspirations, and I incorporate them into my lessons to make them engaging.

Select all the days/times the student would be available to start lessons. Selecting "3pm - 7pm" means the student can start as early as 3pm or start as late as 7pm. It is important that you select as many days and the widest window of start times for each day as possible. That will help us make a match with one of our teachers.
