Bachelors of Musical Arts - University of Kansas City Missouri

Teaching Certificate K-12 Instrumental Music - William Jewell College

Overview:
Karla is a self-motivated and proactive music educator with a solid experience in music performance and hands-on experience in developing and implementing music programs. Guiding, developing, and challenging students to achieve their highest levels has been a successful and passionate experience for her. Karla obtained a Bachelor of Arts in Music in 2004 from, with an emphasis on Viola from UMKC. She was a Viola performer with the Conservatory Orchestra, the Chamber Orchestra, Bach Cantatas, and a string quartet. Her viola teachers have been Dr. Steven Kruse, concert virtuosos Paul Coletti and Scott Lee, and composer Robert Hagenbuch. At the Conservatory she pursued the violin and took lessons from Paul Hatton of the Kansas City Symphony. Karla also received her Music Educators license in Instrumental Music from William Jewell College in 2005. Instrumental Conducting, Secondary Music Methods, Instrumental Techniques, and Educational Psychology were some of the courses that prepared her to become a more knowledgeable teacher. After completing her student teaching at the Liberty Public School District, she pursued her field experience and prepared for her career as an educator at numerous schools ranging from grades 4 - 12 and college students. Currently, Karla plays 4th chair viola with the St. Joesph Symphony and in the past has also performed for KC Civic Orchsestra. She is also the Viola player with Crescendo Trio. They perform 30-35 weddings and corporate events every year. Karla keeps an in-home and downtown studio offering music lessons for children and adults of all ages from beginners to advanced students. Most recently she has had the opportunity to perform with Josh Groban, Michael Buble, and The Trans-Siberian Orchestra. These tours were held at The Starlight Theatre and Tmobile Arena in Kansas City.
EXPERIENCE
Karla received her Music Educators license in Instrumental Music from William Jewell College in 2005. Instrumental Conducting, Secondary Music Methods, Instrumental Techniques, and Educational Psychology were some of the courses that prepared her to become a more knowledgeable teacher. She started private teaching violin and viola lessons in 2002 at REW Band and Orchestra. From there she went to Northland Cathedral School of music in 2006 before starting her own studio in 2010.
METHODS USED
The methods I use for teaching primarly depends on the students' style of learning and the level that they are at musically.  For beginning students I use a lot of visual and aural techniques and for more advanced students I build on what they arleady know and challenge them to go further.  I am also familiar with the suzuki method and pop music styles. For beginner students I use the method book "Essential Elements for Strings". Once all the basics have been learned we then move towards move variety of music books. I use "Essentials for Strings" for scales, Wohlfahrt Etude book for technique, and Suzuki books for solos.
LESSON STYLE
For beginners I use a method book for learning how to read music and learn music theory.  Once the basics are attained I introduce scales and etudes to build on the technical aspects of playing the instrument.  Solo books are also added to the repertoire for the student so that they can use everything they have learned thus far and express that in a piece of music. Younger children will not do as much music reading in the beginning of lessons. I tend to do more of a watch teacher and repeat style to learn the basics. Older students will work out of the books more often.

Select all the days/times the student would be available to start lessons. Selecting "3pm - 7pm" means the student can start as early as 3pm or start as late as 7pm. It is important that you select as many days and the widest window of start times for each day as possible. That will help us make a match with one of our teachers.
