I hold a Bachelors of Music in Vocal Performance from the Eastman School of Music, and a Masters of Music in Vocal Performance (Musical Theatre Concentration) with an Advanced Certificate in Vocal Pedagogy from New York University. I taught at The University of Cape Town as a lecture in Jazz vocal studies from 2004. I was involved in The Artscape Youth Jazz Program as a mentor for several years as well as a performer and lecturer for several years at The National Arts Festival/ Grahamstown Jazz festival in South Africa. I have also taught at the summer jazz camp program in Prague for the past 5 years. My method varies depending on the student. If the student wants a traditional musical approach, and is interested in learning notation and theory, then we will usually start with the Hal Leonard Book Series. If the student doesn’t want to learn notes or the more advanced musical concepts, I usually just start by teaching them simple songs that they know from the radio, TV Shows or movies. I believe that learning how to sing must take place in the studio, but the most important thing that I can do as a teacher is to make sure that the student knows how to transfer the skills learned in the classroom to real-world performing experiences. APPROACH I believe in a holistic approach to teaching, which involves connection to the text and acting. Though I cover many of these aspects in the studio, it is extremely beneficial for students to go outside of the studio and engage in physical courses such as yoga, Alexander technique, acting and dance.
