I always begin by figuring out how I can best teach a student by asking them their interests and goals for singing; whether they want to sing jazz or provide vocals for their rock band, or learn to sing classically, etc. For all students who are atleast in their teens or older, I begin by describing how singing works and talk about the function of the body in singing. Around the age of 15, after about five years of performing, I started teaching guitar lessons to kids around my community and discovered a love for sharing my musical knowledge with others. When I went on to college, I continued teaching individual students and in my sophomore year joined a volunteer teaching group called SLAM! In 1984 I was a music instructor for the Canadian Forces School of Music in Esquimalt British Columbia. Over the last three decades I have taught one-on-one lessons and ensembles at all levels including Elementary, Middle, and High School levels. So, even while building fundamentals, music lessons should be fun and geared toward what the student wants out of all of this.
