I am passionate about introducing music to young students as well as opening new doors to more experienced players. After studying Piano Performance at Biola University I went on the road as the guitar player for the rock band Fastball. I spent the next 12 years touring and recording in bands, honing my craft as a multi-instrumentalist, songwriter, and producer. In addition to teaching piano and guitar I now compose for television and film out of my home studio in North Hollywood, CA. Read More

I start out my beginning Guitar students learning the "open string chords" - I teach my students how to tune their guitars in addition to identifying the note names of each open string - I teach my students "chord progressions" (using the "open string chords") - I get my students playing songs as quickly as possible - i ask my students "what songs they would like to learn?" and proceed to teach them those songs - After my students have learned the "open string chords", i progress to teaching them "barre chords" - I teach my students how to use a "capo" Read More

I've found that being flexible and adaptible is most important to me, as everyone learns in a different way. I place a lot of importance on following student interest and goals as well, since it doesn't matter how great your instruction is if you're bored and don't want to keep playing. I think every student should get as much out of their lesson experience as they want, whether that means a more casual experience where you're not practicing too much throughout the week, or holding my student more accountable if they express more ambitious goals. For beginning students who are children, be able to capture their excitement and build on top of that is very important. 90% of students gave up playing within the first year is because they felt...bored. My method get students quickly be able to play along with songs that they like or hear often in their daily life (ex. radio) then we break down the fundamentals behind the songs and gear the song toward a more classical approach to help students gain a comprehensive understanding, solid foundation and techniques. I first began teaching private lessons on my summer breaks from college back in 2013. What began as a way to make side money quickly grew into a passion for sharing my knowledge with others. The look on a students face when I see a concept "click" in their brain has become a driving force for me, and keeps me passionate about spreading musical ideas to those who truly want to learn. Perhaps we could make up a new song with the note names. Or for example an older adult who is having memory problems for learning a new piece, but is very good at associating the sound of music with a feeling or image. Perhaps we could take the music in smaller chunks with an image association for each new musical chunk. It makes me very happy to watch each individual begin to understand and harness their own personal strengths during the learning process. Read More
