I am very old school, meaning I expect them to memorize lyrics and lines, and understand what they are saying and why. I approach teaching as a teacher who still performs,and learned by doing it. If the student loves their instrument and the music that is written for their instrument, they will feel encouraged to practice. I try to pick up on the student's personality and learning styles and make each person's lesson a combination of my teaching styles and what works best for the student. To summarize the above statement, part of my attitude and approach to teaching is that---while I certainly don't have anything against other beloved method books, such materials and such don't make you a better teacher. Over time, with a bit of studying, trial and error, the most experienced teacher will eventually come to appreciate and employ his/her own method without relying so heavily on any given editor or publisher to teach the students FOR you.
