For beginning students who are children, I typically start with Hal Leonard's Essential Elements. Once the student has progressed to have a grasp of the fundamentals, I will begin to introduce solo repertoire appropriate for their first recital performance. For adults, I try to find out what the student is interested in, and guide my instruction accordingly to keep the lessons engaging and fun, no matter their ability level. While I understand that each and every student is unique in their learning and progress, I will always strive to push my students forward and sometimes out of their comfort zones as to be better performers, better musicians, and better people. If the student already has a grasp on the fundamentals, my focus goes to exercises that extend range, fine-tune timbral sound, build technical flexibility, and expand dynamic range. The repertoire is typically "suggested" by me (to reinforce learning objectives) but is not "officially picked" without the approval and enthusiasm of the student.
