Music lessons can incorporate a variety of approaches depending on student preference and abilities. Some students love to read notation. I encourage these students to develop auditory skills through imitation games and improvisation. Other students play by ear and prefer to memorize all pieces. I encourage these students to learn to read notation and to look at the notes when playing familiar pieces. For young children, I create short musical tunes they can read using colors. Read More

I believe teaching music doesn’t just teach music—it teaches us life skills that are applicable to any field and any situation. My teaching philosophy is a mix of many ideas, and I believe it is more successful the more places I incorporate ideas from. --Capital High School Academy for the Performing Arts recipient of the "Music Legend" Award --New Mexico high School All-State trombonist, 2002, 2003 --New Mexico Inter-Collegiate Honor Band, 2006 --Fudung University, Shanghai, China certificate of appreciation for contributions to the performing festival at the 2010 World Expo Music Festival --Outstanding musicianship award, University of Nevada at Reno Jazz Festival, April of 2008, and 2011 for composition as well as outstanding soloist. --New Mexico State University Honors Recital performer, Fall 2007, Spring 2008 --Graduate Assistant to Athletic Bands, University of Utah, 2009-2011 --Performed with artists such as: John Fedchock, Steve Houghton, Byron Stripling, Doc Severinson, Jeff Nielsen, the Harry James Orchestra, Phil Campo and the "Loose Change" Jazz band, Five by Design, Gene Pokorney, and many others. --Current Middle and high school Choir/Band director with Albuquerque Public Schools --Clinician for various schools in area -Composer/Arranger Read More

I start by gathering information about a student's goals and inspirations, and prior knowledge/experience. From there, we develop a plan for warmup exercises, technical exercises, literature, sight-reading, ear-training and listening excerpts to be studied. I determine whether the student needs to begin learning primarily by ear or using some kind of written notation. We find a schedule that will work with both of us. Most students have a regular weekly time, but some students need a variable time due to their individual schedule so we work that out in advance. Read More

I don't believe in wasting too much of a student's time running scales. I'll test your ear and your sense of pitch with a few scales initially, and then move on to the study of singing styles, the key aspects or projection, dynamics, phrasing, and how to blend your influences into your own style, while offering some tips on breathing well and staying fit: a great singer, much like an athlete, must stay in training, and always have ears to hear more and learn more. My supportive approach to teaching begins with finding out where the student is in skill development and assessing the student's desire to learn or need for the subject matter, then assisting them, with materials and techniques, in learning the skills necessary for their chosen goals. For piano students several methods can be used: J.W.Schaum, John Thompson, Alfred Adult Course, etc. . For voice students, the Cocone, Vaccai, and Abt Methods can be applied. Read More

I believe that motivating and inspiring music students requires a different approach. I love to teach because its very rewarding to see when a student gets it after many trials and errors. Every practice session should have a goal, and practice goals are more important than setting a time. I believe that everyone has the capability to play something easy and fun if he/she is willing to put some time into the practice. Read More
